We always welcome help with events and will be in touch to get you started. There are roles available for all levels of experience

Event Helper
Helpers work alongside experienced event leaders and skippers to run events
Ideal if you are thinking about working towards RYA Dayskipper or Paddlesport instructor
As an Event Helper, you might be happy skippering a boat on one of the easier club events, sailing in close company with an  Event Skipper on another boat. to gain experience.

Event Skipper
Event Skippers take charge of a boat during an event and take responsibility for their crew
Ideal if you have  a good level of Experience and/or you have passed your Dayskipper and have a good level of experience sailing club boats

As skipper, you are legally responsible for the safety of everyone on board. This means making sensible decisions, checking conditions, ensuring the crew are suitably briefed and equipped, and only going afloat when it’s safe to do so. You don’t need to be perfect — just thoughtful, prepared, and willing to adjust plans if conditions or people’s abilities change. You’re not alone either: the club is here to support you, and asking for help is always the right call.

Event Leader / Organiser 
Event Organisers take responsibility for the safe running of the Boat Club events
Ideal for Experienced sailors and kayakers with a leadership or skippering qualification.  You could organise a club  Kayak up to Woodmill as a paddle sport instructor, or organise a Sail on the Solent as an experienced day skipper

Sign-Off Team Member
The Sign-off Team work with club members to ensure they will be safe using the boat club boats and that club members have an appropriate level of competence and support for the boats and journeys they want to undertake.

When you Sail with people who have less experience, you’re not “just another Sailor.” You’re the person they’re quietly relying on.

Leadership isn’t about titles or being paid — it’s about the decisions you make. If you choose the passage, assess the level, or reassure a nervous beginner, you’ve taken on a duty of care whether you meant to or not.

The safest leaders aren’t the best Sailors. They’re the ones who make conservative calls when conditions change. Good leadership is knowing when to say no.
