Event Briefing Checklist
Before every event, members should understand what type of event it is, who is responsible for safety, and what’s expected of them.
Supervised events have a qualified supervisor who provides Leadershop and/or instruction and makes safety decisions.
Skippered events have no instruction: each boat has a named skipper who is responsible for the safety of their boat and crew, regardless of qualifications.
Self-led events have no leader or skipper at all: participants are responsible for themselves while looking out for each other.
In all cases, conditions may change, plans may be adjusted or cancelled, and every participant has the right to opt out at any time.
Event briefings happen before going afloat, decisions continue on the water, and learning is shared afterwards.
Each event is supported by an appropriate activity risk assessment. These describe typical hazards and controls, but do not replace on-the-day judgement.
